Good chatbot names are short, easy to say, tied to your business and honest about being an AI: "Mia, Studio Lumen's AI assistant" or "Lumen Booking Assistant" work, while a bare "Sarah" next to a stock photo does not. The name then has to show up in three places that agree: the chat header, the first message and the agent's own answer when a visitor asks who they are talking to. Keep human names for the people on your team who join the chat.
Ultimo Bots is an AI agent for your website, a chat link, Messenger, Instagram and Slack: it answers visitors from your own content under the name and avatar you choose, and on your website and chat link it says up front that it is an AI assistant and hands the conversation to you, under your own name, while you are online.
Chatbot names: what a good one does for your business
Most lists of names for chatbots treat the name as decoration: three hundred cute options, pick the one you like. For a business, the name has four jobs:
- Be recognized. Visitors should link the name to you, not to an assistant they met somewhere else.
- Sound like you. A law firm and a surf shop should not introduce their AI the same way.
- Be honest. The name, or the words right next to it, tells the visitor they are talking to an AI.
- Work in every language your visitors write in. Ultimo Bots answers in the visitor's language, more than 80 of them, but the name stays the same in each.
The third job matters most: a visitor who finds out halfway through a chat that "Sarah" is software stops trusting even the correct answers. And the name is only the label; what visitors remember is whether your knowledge base answered their question.
What is a good chatbot name?
A good name passes five quick tests:
- Short. One or two syllables, or a short phrase such as "Booking Assistant". It has to fit a chat header that is narrow on a phone.
- Tied to your business. "Lumen Assistant" tells the visitor where they are; "Nova" could belong to anyone.
- Paired with "AI assistant". Either inside the name ("the Harbor Homes AI assistant") or right next to it in the first message.
- Not borrowed. Siri, Alexa, ChatGPT, Gemini, Claude and Copilot belong to someone else, and visitors who see those names expect that product.
- Clean in other languages. Look the name up in the languages your visitors use. "Mist" sounds soft in English and means dung in German.
Run all your chatbot name ideas through these five before anyone falls for one.
Should your AI agent have a human name?
It can, as long as the visitor never has to guess. You have three options:
- A human first name with the AI label: "Mia, Studio Lumen's AI assistant". Warm and personal; good for salons, studios and small shops, as long as the label is always attached.
- A brand name: "Lumen". Feels like part of the brand, but the first message still has to say "AI assistant".
- A role name: "Booking Assistant". Clear and calm; good for clinics, law firms and visitors in a hurry.

A human name is fine when it always travels with "AI assistant" and an avatar that is clearly not a person: your logo, an illustration or an icon. A human first name next to a photo of a person is the one combination to avoid, because its only effect is to make people believe someone is typing.
Keep real human names for real humans. When you take over a conversation on your website or chat link, the visitor sees "[your name] has joined the chat", a bar under the header showing who is connected and your avatar next to your messages, while the AI notice steps aside. You set that display name and avatar under Live Chat settings, in Agent Identity, and can change the name each time you join. More on live chat.
It is also a legal question now. Maine (10 M.R.S. §1500-DD, in effect since September 24, 2025) bars businesses from using an AI chatbot or other technology with consumers in a way that may lead a reasonable consumer to believe they are dealing with a human, unless the consumer is clearly and conspicuously told they are not. Utah (Utah Code 13-77-103, in effect since May 7, 2025) requires a business using generative AI with a consumer to say it is AI and not a human when the person clearly asks, with stricter rules for regulated professions. Its safe harbor in 13-77-104 covers AI that clearly and conspicuously discloses, at the outset and throughout the interaction, that it is generative AI, not human, or an AI assistant. For visitors in the EU, Article 50(1) of the AI Act has applied since August 2, 2026: people must be told they are interacting with an AI unless that is obvious. As of October 2026; practical guidance, not legal advice.
Whatever you name your agent, Ultimo Bots shows "You are chatting with an AI assistant" above the chat on your website and chat link before the first message, in eight languages, matched to the visitor's browser, and you cannot switch it off. Whether your setup meets a safe harbor is for your lawyer to say.
Chatbot names by business type
Here are AI chatbot names for ten kinds of business: a human first name with the AI label, a brand name built from the business name, and a role name. The last column introduces the strongest pick (in bold). Swap in your own business name; the pattern matters more than the word.

| Business | Human name + AI label | Brand name | Role name | Self-introduction for the strongest pick |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Hair or beauty salon | Mia, Studio Lumen's AI assistant | Lumen | Booking Assistant | Hi, I'm Mia, Studio Lumen's AI assistant. Ask me about prices, or let me find you a time for a cut. |
| Dental or medical front desk | Nora, Bright Smile's AI assistant | Bright | Front Desk Assistant | Hello, I'm the Bright Smile Dental front desk assistant, an AI. I can help with appointments, opening hours and insurance questions. |
| Restaurant or café | Marco, Trattoria Sole's AI assistant | Sole | Menu Helper | Ciao, I'm Marco, Trattoria Sole's AI assistant. Ask me about the menu, dietary options or opening hours. |
| Real estate agency | Claire, Harbor Homes' AI assistant | Harbor | Listings Assistant | Hi, I'm the Harbor Homes listings assistant, an AI. Ask me about homes for sale, or leave your details for a viewing. |
| Online store | Theo, Fernwood's AI assistant | Fern | Shop Helper | Hi, I'm Fern, Fernwood Goods' AI shopping assistant. Tell me what you're looking for and I'll find a match. |
| Law or accounting firm | Grace, Keller & Hart's AI assistant | Keller & Hart Assistant | Intake Assistant | Hi, I'm the AI intake assistant for Keller & Hart. I can explain our services and fees and help you request a consultation. |
| Plumber, electrician or other trade | Sam, Rapid Flow's AI assistant | Flow | Quote Assistant | Hi, I'm Sam, Rapid Flow Plumbing's AI assistant. Tell me what needs fixing and your zip code, and I'll pass it to our team. |
| Fitness or yoga studio | Tess, Northside Yoga's AI assistant | Northside | Class Finder | Hi, I'm Tess, Northside Yoga's AI assistant. Ask me about class times, memberships or your first visit. |
| Hotel, B&B or vacation rental | Lena, Lakeview Inn's AI assistant | Lakeview | Guest Assistant | Hello, I'm the Lakeview Inn guest assistant, an AI. Ask me about rooms, parking or check-in, in your own language. |
| Coach or consultant | Dana Ruiz's AI assistant | Ruiz Coaching Assistant | Intro Call Assistant | Hi, I'm Dana Ruiz's AI assistant. I can explain how coaching works and find you a time for an intro call. |
The clinic and law-firm rows pick the role name on purpose: their visitors often arrive worried, and a job title reads as more serious. Their introductions offer appointments and information, never a diagnosis or legal advice; back that up with a behavior such as "Never give medical advice; offer an appointment instead." The coach row keeps the human name for the human.
Make every promise true before launch: "find you a time" needs a booking skill with Cal.com or Wix Bookings (with Calendly, the agent sends your booking link, so write "send you a booking link" instead), and "pass it to our team" uses the built-in lead capture, which reads the visitor's name and email back before sending; add the zip code as an extra field in the AI Studio.
AI agent names that say what the agent does
Role names such as "Booking Assistant", "Order Help", "Quote Assistant" or "Returns Helper" tell visitors what to ask before they type. That matters most when people arrive in a hurry, like a homeowner on a plumber's site at 11 pm with water on the floor.
A role name beats a personality name when your agent mostly does one thing. In Ultimo Bots, those jobs are skills you describe in plain words in the AI Studio, such as booking in Cal.com, checking a Wix Stores order after the visitor confirms a code sent to their email, or sending a Stripe payment link. Name the agent after its main skill and the name becomes a promise you can keep, or combine both: "Mia, Studio Lumen's AI booking assistant".
The same goes for any AI bot names your customers see: say what it does and that it is an AI.
What is a funny name for a chatbot?
Funny chatbot names work when the brand is playful and the questions are low-stakes. A pun shows personality in two syllables and still leaves room for "AI assistant" right after it:
- Crumb, a bakery's AI assistant
- Purl, a yarn shop's AI assistant
- Biscuit, a dog groomer's AI assistant
- Scoop, an ice cream shop's AI assistant
- Spoke, a bike shop's AI assistant
Humor backfires where visitors arrive stressed: complaints, refunds, payments, anything about health or money. Someone chasing a late refund is not in the mood for a pun. Keep the joke in the name and the facts in the introduction: "Hi, I'm Crumb, the AI assistant at Rise Bakery. Ask me about cakes, opening hours or custom orders."
Names to avoid
- Famous assistants and other brands. The names in the five tests above are taken, and so are your competitors' assistant names. Borrowing them confuses visitors and invites a trademark complaint.
- A real colleague's name. If your receptionist is Anna, an AI called Anna causes mix-ups the first time she joins a chat.
- Popular AI-sounding names. Nova, Aria and Luna are used by plenty of assistants already, so they say nothing about you.
- Names that change meaning abroad. Remember "Mist".
- Long names. The header allows 60 characters, but on a phone the title is set larger and a long one wraps.
- A staff-style name with no label, such as "Sarah from Support": the human-name problem in its most common form.
Most AI assistant names on consumer lists were picked for a helper at home, not for your business.
Where the name shows in Ultimo Bots
The name lives in five places, and all five should agree:
- The header. Under Deploy, then Design, the Header Text is the title of the chat window; new agents start with a generic "Chat with us". You can add a header logo, and the avatar icon you upload appears beside every AI message: use your logo or an illustration, never a photo of a person. More on the website widget.
- The welcome messages. Up to three, shown at the top of the chat and, if you switch pop-ups on, next to the chat button. Put the name in the first: "Hi, I'm Mia, Studio Lumen's AI assistant."
- The agent's own answers. The agent is not told what your header says, so it will not call itself Mia just because the header does. In the AI Studio, click Add behavior, then Enter manually, and add this rule, which the agent follows in every conversation:
Your name is Mia, Studio Lumen's AI assistant. Use this name when you introduce yourself or are asked your name.
- The agent's name in your portal. It sits at the top of the agent's Overview page, where you can rename it, and it is the business the AI is told it works for. If you installed from the Wix App Market or the WordPress plugin, it was filled in from your site address, so check it. Use your business name there, not the persona's, or the agent may call itself the assistant for Mia.
- The AI notice. "You are chatting with an AI assistant" stays above the chat on your website and chat link, whatever name you pick. A visitor can close it once read, and it steps aside while you are in the chat.
On Instagram and Messenger, people see your Instagram account or Facebook Page name and picture, not your widget header. Those apps and Slack show no AI notice and no welcome message, so the first reply has to say it. Add a second behavior the same way, with Add behavior, then Enter manually:
If none of your replies so far has said you are an AI assistant, say so briefly in this reply. The welcome message at the start does not count, since the visitor may not have seen it. If asked whether you are human, say plainly you are an AI.
It is written for every channel on purpose, because the agent is not told which app a message comes from.
Renaming later is easy: update the header, the welcome messages and the name behavior, and new conversations use the new name. On Boost and Ultimo you can also remove "Powered by Ultimo Bots", so the only brand in the chat window is yours.
Set your agent's name and avatar
Score your shortlist: a five-point naming scorecard
Put your top three names side by side and give each one 0, 1 or 2 points per row:
| Criterion | 0 points | 1 point | 2 points |
|---|---|---|---|
| Sayable | Hard to spell or say aloud | Fine once you have heard it | Anyone can say and type it |
| Yours | Already a famous assistant or another brand | A common word anyone could use | Tied to your business or the agent's job |
| Honest | Needs a photo of a person to work | Works only with a separate AI notice | Reads naturally next to "AI assistant" |
| Clear in every language you serve | Odd or rude meaning in one of them | Not checked yet | Checked and clean |
| Fits the header on a phone | Wraps onto two lines | Fits, but crowds the header | Readable at a glance |
For Studio Lumen, "Lumen Booking Assistant" scores 10. "Mia, Studio Lumen's AI assistant" scores 9: Mia is a name anyone could use, so it drops a point on Yours; the header says "Mia, our AI assistant" and the first welcome message adds the studio's name. "Nova" scores 6: short and easy to say, but not theirs and silent about being an AI.
Pick the highest score and put it in the header, the first welcome message and the name behavior, with your business name as the agent's name in the portal. Then test it like a visitor in the AI Studio's live test: ask "What's your name?" and "Am I talking to a real person?" Both answers should be short and plain.
