A Telegram chatbot is an automated account that replies to people who message it on Telegram. For a business, the useful kind answers questions from your own website and documents, takes the details of anyone who wants a quote or an appointment, and needs no code: you create the bot in Telegram's BotFather, paste its token into an AI agent, and customers who message your bot get answers.
Ultimo Bots is an AI agent that answers your customers on Telegram, your website, a chat link, Messenger, Instagram and Slack from your own content: it captures leads, books appointments, alerts you when a customer leaves their details, and connects to Zapier, Make or n8n for everything else, with Telegram included on every plan.
Telegram leaves one job to you: telling customers they are talking to an AI. Your website and chat link show "You are chatting with an AI assistant" before the first message, in eight languages; on Telegram, a short line in your bot's description and one behavior for your agent make it clear from the start. Both are below, with the laws that now expect it.
What a Telegram chatbot does for a business
Search for a chatbot for Telegram and the top results mix developer tutorials with lists of bots people use for themselves: a Telegram AI bot that writes, translates or draws pictures inside the app. That is a different product. The bot in this guide belongs to your business, carries your name, and talks to your customers when they message it.
Telegram welcomes this: its bot features page says third-party AI bots "are welcome to communicate with users" as long as they follow its rules, and every chatbot Telegram users talk to, from a quiz to a support desk, is a bot account anyone can create in BotFather.
A good Telegram customer service bot does three jobs:
- Answer. Opening hours, prices, delivery areas, how a service works, from what you have already published.
- Collect. When a customer wants a quote, a callback or an appointment, it takes their name and email and passes the request on.
- Route. You get an alert for every new request, and the whole conversation waits for you in the portal.
That is most of what people mean by a Telegram bot for business. It works in private chats: a customer opens your bot, writes to it one to one, and the agent replies in text; it answers, it does not broadcast. It is a bot account of its own, with your business name on it, so your personal Telegram stays private.
Three ways to build a Telegram bot for your business
| Route | What you build | What you keep up to date | Who it suits |
|---|---|---|---|
| Code it yourself | A program on Telegram's Bot API, written in Python or wired up as an n8n or Make workflow | Hosting, the code, every answer, and changes to Telegram's API | Developers and agencies building something custom |
| A flow builder | Menus, buttons and scripted replies in a visual editor | Every branch, by hand, each time a price or policy changes | Fixed paths: simple FAQs, sign-ups, quizzes |
| An AI agent that reads your content | Nothing new: you connect your website and documents | Your website and files, which you keep current anyway; a re-read updates the answers | Businesses whose customers ask questions in their own words |
A Telegram chatbot builder with buttons is quick to start and predictable, but it can only answer what someone drew a branch for; a customer who types "do you deliver to Brooklyn on Sundays?" lands on a menu. Code gives you full control, and makes you the person who maintains it.
A Telegram AI chatbot that answers from your own content skips both jobs: no code, no branches, and answers that change when your website changes and the agent re-reads it (manually on any plan, or automatically on Boost and Ultimo if you switch it on).
How to set up a Telegram chatbot for your business in ten minutes
You need Telegram on your phone or computer and an Ultimo Bots agent that has read your website. If you do not have one yet, create it in the portal first: it starts from your website, and you can add PDF and Word files, Q&A pairs, Google Drive, OneDrive and Notion to its knowledge base.

- Create the bot in BotFather. In Telegram, open @BotFather, Telegram's official tool for making bots, and send /newbot. Pick a display name, usually your business name, and a username that ends in "bot", such as spokechain_bot. The username cannot be changed later, so choose with care.
- Copy the token. BotFather replies with a long token. Telegram's advice is blunt: anyone who has it can control your bot, so paste it only where your bot runs.
- Connect it in Ultimo Bots. In the portal, open Deploy, then Channels, choose Telegram and click Connect Telegram. Paste the token, select the agent that should reply, choose a reply behavior (explained below the list) and click Connect Telegram. The portal checks the token with Telegram and connects the bot; no approval is needed.
- Fill in the bot's profile. Back in BotFather, /setdescription sets the text new users see in a box titled "What can this bot do?" before they write, up to 512 characters. /setabouttext sets the short bio on the bot's profile, up to 120 characters, which Telegram also sends along when someone shares your bot. /setuserpic adds your logo.
- Test it as a customer. From your own phone, open your bot (t.me/ followed by its username), tap Start, ask something your website answers, then ask for someone to get back to you. Check that the agent reads your details back and that the lead and its alert arrive.
The two reply behaviors decide who gets answers. All incoming messages lets the agent reply to every message your bot receives, including conversations that already exist: the right choice for a new bot. Only activated conversations keeps the bot silent until you switch the AI on for a conversation in your Inbox: useful when you want the AI only in chats you pick. You can change it later under Manage connections. More on the Telegram channel.
What your Telegram bot can do once it is connected
The agent on Telegram is the same one that runs on your website, with the same knowledge and the same skills. You describe skills in plain words in the AI Studio, and every connection is listed under app actions.
| A customer on Telegram asks... | What the agent does |
|---|---|
| A question your website, files or Q&A pairs answer | Answers from your content, in the customer's language (more than 80 languages) |
| For a quote, a callback or a reply from your team | Takes their name and email (more fields if you add them), reads them back, and sends the request on |
| To book an appointment | Books in Cal.com and reads the time and name back, sends your Calendly booking link, or shows your Wix Bookings times and hands over the booking page with the day selected |
| To pay a deposit or an invoice | Sends a Stripe payment link, so card details never enter the chat |
| Where their order is | For Wix Stores orders, shows status and tracking after the customer confirms a six-digit code sent to their email |
| For something your other tools should know | Saves a HubSpot contact or a Mailchimp subscriber, or sends the details to Zapier; Make and n8n can also send an answer back into the chat |
Replies arrive as text. Links come through as plain web addresses, and the product cards your website chat can show stay on the website; on Telegram, the customer gets the written answer. Photos, voice messages and stickers do not get a reply, so a short line in your bot's description asking customers to type their question saves confusion.
How to tell if someone is a bot on Telegram?
Customers can see they are writing to a bot account, because its username ends in "bot". What Telegram does not tell them is whether a person or an AI writes the replies, and many people ask before they share anything. Answer before they do.

Say it in two places:
- In the bot's description. It is the first thing a new customer sees, before they tap Start. For example: "I'm the AI assistant for Spoke & Chain Bikes. Ask me about repairs, prices and opening hours, or leave your details and the team will get back to you."
- In the agent's first reply. In the AI Studio, choose Add behavior, then Enter manually, and paste this word for word:
If none of your replies so far has said you are an AI assistant, say so briefly in this reply. The welcome message at the start does not count, since the visitor may not have seen it. If asked whether you are human, say plainly you are an AI.
Behaviors apply on every channel, and this one holds everywhere. Your website's welcome text reaches the agent on Telegram too, as if it had already said it, though Telegram customers never see it; hence the second sentence. Keep rules like this channel-neutral: the agent is not told which app a message comes from.
On your website and chat link, Ultimo Bots shows its AI notice for you before the visitor can type, and you cannot switch it off.
It is also becoming the law in more places. Maine (10 M.R.S. §1500-DD, in effect since September 24, 2025) bars businesses from using an AI chatbot with consumers in a way that may lead a reasonable consumer to believe they are dealing with a human, unless the consumer is told clearly and conspicuously that they are not. Utah (Utah Code sections 13-77-103 and 13-77-104, in effect since May 7, 2025) requires a business that uses generative AI in a consumer transaction to say it is AI and not a human when a person clearly asks, with an up-front written disclosure for regulated occupations in high-risk interactions. It offers a safe harbor when the AI clearly and conspicuously discloses, at the outset and throughout the interaction, that it is generative AI, not human, or an AI assistant. A description line and a first-reply rule say it at the start; whether that meets the safe harbor, which also asks for the disclosure throughout the interaction, is a question for your lawyer. California's bot law (Business and Professions Code section 17941) bars bots that mislead people about their artificial identity to drive a sale, and a business that discloses its bot is not liable under it. For customers in the EU, the AI Act's rule that people must be told when they are talking to an AI (Article 50(1)) has applied since August 2, 2026. As of October 2026; practical guidance, not legal advice.
Are Telegram chatbots safe?
For customers, Telegram's Privacy Policy (section 6.3) lists what a bot receives: their screen name, username and profile pictures, the messages they send it, and their app language. If they tap a link or button from the bot that leads to a website its owner controls, that site can see their IP address. Bots are run by whoever made them, not by Telegram, so the business behind a bot matters more than the bot.
For you as the owner, three habits keep it that way:
- Guard the token. Anyone who holds it can control your bot. Paste it only into the portal; if it ever leaks, send /token to BotFather for a new one and paste that into Connect Telegram.
- Publish your privacy policy. Telegram's Bot Developer Terms bind every bot to a privacy policy: Telegram's standard one applies unless you set your own in BotFather, and making sure it fits is your job. A bot that collects names and emails is reason enough to link yours. The terms also forbid collecting more data than your service needs.
- Ask only for what you need. The agent asks for the fields your lead skill asks for, name and email unless you add more, and only accepts an email address or phone number the customer actually typed.
Every conversation lands in your portal Inbox under the customer's Telegram name, so you can read exactly what the agent said.
When a customer on Telegram needs a person
On Telegram the agent stays in the conversation; there is no live takeover inside Telegram. Its job is to make sure nobody who wants your team gets lost. Here is a new customer opening a bike repair shop's bot and tapping Start, which sends /start:
Customer: /start
AI: Hi, I'm the AI assistant for Spoke & Chain Bikes. Ask me about repairs, prices or opening hours.
Customer: do you service e-bikes? and what does a tune-up cost
AI: Yes, we service e-bikes, including motor and battery checks. A standard tune-up is $89; e-bike repairs are quoted after a quick look in the shop.
Customer: my rear hub is grinding. can someone get back to me with a quote?
AI: Of course. What is your name, and which email should the team reply to?
Customer: Jordan Lee, jordan.lee@example.com
AI: Thanks, Jordan. Just to check: Jordan Lee, jordan.lee@example.com. Is that right?
Customer: yes
AI: Your request has been sent to the team. They will get back to you at jordan.lee@example.com about the hub.
The lead lands in Leads with the whole conversation, and an alert goes out in the portal and by email. To get it on your phone, open Notifications in the portal, turn on Telegram for new leads, click Connect Telegram chat, press START in the chat that opens, then click Save. Alerts then arrive from Ultimo Bots' own notification bot, with a button that opens the portal; live-chat requests from your website can come the same way, and Slack works too.
Two more controls help:
- Pause the AI for one conversation. In the Inbox, open the conversation and switch AI Auto-Response off; your bot then stays quiet with that customer. You cannot write as your bot from the portal, so pause when you will follow up by email or phone.
- Send real-time conversations to your website. Real-time chat with a person happens in your website chat or chat link: while you are switched online in the portal, a "Talk to a human" button shows there, and you join the same window with the history in front of you (live chat). Put your chat link in your bot's about text, so customers who want that know where to go.
How much does a Telegram bot cost?
Creating a bot in BotFather costs nothing. The AI behind it is a plan, priced per agent with no seat fees, and every plan includes Telegram and every other channel:
| Plan | Monthly | Billed yearly | AI responses per month | Skills |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Smart | $29 | $19 per month | 500 | 3 |
| Boost | $59 | $39 per month | 2,000 | 10 |
| Ultimo | $149 | $99 per month | 10,000 | 30 |
A reply on Telegram counts as an AI response, just like one on your website; the bike shop chat above used five. You get a warning at 80% of your allowance and can top up message credits in a busy month. Every new agent starts on a small one-time free allowance, and every paid plan starts with a 7-day free trial. Details on the pricing page.
If your Telegram bot stays silent: a quick troubleshooting table
Most surprises after setup have one of these causes:
| What you see | Likely cause | Fix |
|---|---|---|
| No reply to any message | No agent is assigned to the bot, or the reply behavior is Only activated conversations | Under Deploy, Channels, Telegram, open Manage connections: assign the agent, or switch to All incoming messages |
| One customer gets no reply | The AI is switched off for that conversation, or was never switched on | In the Inbox, open the conversation and switch AI Auto-Response on |
| It stopped replying after you used the token in another tool | Telegram delivers a bot's messages to one webhook address at a time, so the last tool you connected receives them | Paste the token again under Connect Telegram, and give every other tool a bot of its own |
| It stopped after you got a new token from BotFather | The portal still holds the old token | Paste the new token under Connect Telegram |
| No reply in a group | The agent answers private chats with your bot | Share your bot's t.me link in the group so people message it directly |
| Photos, voice messages or stickers get no answer | The agent replies to typed text | Ask customers in the bot's description to type their question |
| It never says it is an AI | Telegram shows no AI notice of its own | Add the description line and the behavior from above |
| It says it has paused | The agent has used its AI responses for the month | Top up message credits or upgrade; the 80% warning gives you notice |
| A booking question gets a link, not a time | Your booking skill uses Calendly, which sends a booking link | Connect Cal.com if you want bookings made inside the chat |
A Telegram chatbot earns its place when your customers already live in Telegram and keep asking the same questions. Create the bot, connect it, put the AI line in the description and the behavior in the AI Studio, then send your bot the three questions customers ask you most. If you would sign every answer, share the bot's link wherever your customers find you.
