Search for the best AI chatbot for Shopify and you get lists of ten App Store apps that all promise the same thing: instant answers to product questions. Answers are where it starts. What decides it is what the assistant can do after the answer, with your catalog, your shipping and your team, and what each reply costs you once the store gets busy.
What makes the best AI chatbot for Shopify?
An AI chatbot for Shopify is a text assistant on your storefront that answers shoppers from your products and store content, and passes them to a person or to another system when an answer is not enough. It sits in the corner of every page, where a shopper would otherwise open a contact form or leave.
Four things separate a good one from a chat bubble with a script:
- Grounded answers. It answers from your products, pages and policies: prices, sizes, care, shipping and returns, not from guesses about your business.
- Work after the answer. It can quote a delivery estimate, take a pre-order request, send a payment link or add a newsletter sign-up, through skills that call the tools your store already uses.
- A real exit. A shopper who asks for a person reaches one while someone on your team is online.
- A bill you can predict. You know what one answer costs before a busy season, and adding a teammate does not raise it.
The first and third are the table stakes of Shopify AI chat support. The second is where an AI agent stops being a FAQ bot. It is the part worth testing before you pick, because it decides whether the chat saves you work or only moves the same questions into a new window.
What Shopify Inbox, Tidio and Gorgias offer
Shopify Inbox is Shopify's own app, listed as free. On October 30, 2026, its App Store page described it as "an AI-powered sales associate on your storefront" that learns from your catalog, policies and store content while you control its tone, style and rules. It is a chat about your catalog, built into Shopify.
Tidio is a live chat and helpdesk tool with an AI agent called Lyro. Its pricing page on the same day showed Starter from $24.17 a month for 100 billable conversations, and Lyro as an add-on from $32.50 a month for 50 Lyro AI conversations.
Gorgias is a helpdesk for ecommerce teams. Its pricing page billed the helpdesk by tickets and its AI Agent per automated interaction, which it defines as a customer request fully resolved without a human agent: $1.00 each on monthly plans and $0.90 on annual plans, with each one also counting as a helpdesk ticket.
Ultimo BotsSo far this is a comparison of answering and billing. The shopping questions that cost a store owner the most time are often the ones that need a second step: when will it arrive, can I reserve the next batch, can you send me a payment link. That second step is what the rest of this guide is about.
Can you add an AI chatbot to Shopify without an app?
Yes. Ultimo Bots goes into your Shopify theme as a three-line snippet that loads the agent on every page of the store. Here is the whole setup:
- 1
Start the agent from your store
In the Ultimo Bots portal, create an agent from your store's web address. It reads the text on your pages, images only by their alt text, so product pages, your FAQ and your shipping and returns policies become its first knowledge.
- 2
Copy the Shopify snippet
Open Deploy > Channels and pick the Shopify card. It shows your snippet with your agent already filled in.
<div id="chat-widget-container" data-user-id="YOUR-AGENT-ID"></div> <script src="https://robert-kloepsch.github.io/ultimo-bots-widget/dist/bundle.js" defer></script> <a href="https://www.ultimo-bots.com" target="_blank" rel="noopener" style="display: none;">Our website uses an intelligent AI assistant powered by Ultimo Bots to improve customer service.</a> - 3
Paste it into theme.liquid
In Shopify, go to Online Store > Themes, click the ... menu on your live theme and choose Edit code. Open Layout >
theme.liquid, paste the snippet on the line just before the closing</body>tag and click Save. Duplicate the theme first if you want a backup. - 4
Check what it learned
Open Knowledge Base > Website Links and check that your product pages, FAQ and your shipping and returns policies are in the list. Add any page that is missing by its address.
- 5
Rewrite the welcome
Ultimo Bots puts in a starting welcome message and starter questions; rewrite them under Deploy > Design so they sound like your store. Starter questions take up to 40 characters each.
With your product pages in its knowledge, a shopper can ask "Which of your plants are safe for cats?" and get an answer from the text on those pages. When your range changes, re-read your site from Website Links at any time; on Boost it can re-read your site monthly, on Ultimo up to daily. The knowledge base page lists every other source it can learn from, including Google Drive, OneDrive and Notion.
“Which plants are safe for cats?”
Build it with Mo: delivery dates from your shipping account
Ultimo Bots is an AI agent platform where you describe in plain words what your agent should do, and Mo, the builder in the AI Studio, builds it as a skill: on ready-made app actions, on any public API your store already uses, or on a remote MCP server. You never write code; you write the job.
Take Fernhouse Plant Co., a fictional houseplant shop in Portland, Oregon, that sells on Shopify. After "is this one pet-safe?", the question it gets most is "when will it get here?" Live plants ship Monday to Wednesday only, so no box sits in a depot over the weekend, and the shop buys its labels through Shippo. The owner opens the AI Studio and writes to Mo:
When a customer asks when an order would arrive, ask for the delivery city, state and ZIP code. We ship plants Monday to Wednesday only, from ZIP 97214 in Portland, in our standard box: 14 x 10 x 10 inches, 6 lb. Work out the next ship day from today, get the USPS Ground Advantage estimate from our Shippo account, and tell the customer the ship day and the expected arrival. Say it is the carrier's estimate and that shipping costs show at checkout.Mo reads Shippo's API docs itself and builds one skill from two building blocks. A small calculation finds the next Monday, Tuesday or Wednesday from today's date in the shop's time zone. An HTTP call asks Shippo for rates on that box to the shopper's address and takes back the transit time, which Shippo's API reference describes as an average, non-binding estimate in days. That is why the owner asked the agent to call it an estimate.
Shippo expects its API key in the request header (authentication guide), so Mo asks for it in a secure field with the button Save securely. The portal's note under that field says the key "is stored encrypted, never shown in the chat and never sent to the AI." Mo then tests the building blocks and tells the owner, in plain words, what the agent can now do.
Here is how it runs. On Thursday, November 12, a shopper on the fiddle-leaf fig page asks how long delivery to Austin, Texas would take. Above the chat the widget shows "You are chatting with an AI assistant", and the agent, following the behavior Fernhouse saved, introduces itself as the shop's AI assistant and asks for the ZIP code; she types 78704. It answers: "Our plants ship Monday to Wednesday, so an order today leaves on Monday, November 16. USPS estimates 3 days to 78704, so expect it around Thursday, November 19. That's the carrier's estimate, and shipping costs show at checkout."
Before shoppers rely on it, ask the same question yourself in the Test tab of the AI Studio. Those test chats are real: the agent calls Shippo with your key, and the answer uses AI credits like a shopper's. Building with Mo draws on the same balance; a quick question uses a few credits, building a skill more. Smart includes 3 skills you build, Boost 10 and Ultimo 30, and the built-in lead skill does not count toward them.
The same pattern covers the other questions that need a second step: a back-in-stock or pre-order request into a system you already run, a size recommendation from your own size chart, a payment link for a custom order. If the system has a public API with a key, describe the job to Mo. Ready-made skills cover Stripe payment links, Calendly booking links, HubSpot contacts and Mailchimp sign-ups; the app actions page lists them, and the AI Studio page shows how building works.
What happens when a shopper wants a person?
People hate being trapped by a bot, and a shopper with a damaged delivery likes it least. While someone on your team is switched online in the live chat, the widget shows a "Talk to a human" button. The teammate clicks Join, takes over the same window with the whole history, and the AI stops replying until they leave.
When nobody on your team is online, the button stays hidden and the agent keeps answering. When it cannot answer reliably, or a shopper wants something only your team can give, it offers once to forward the request and asks for contact details only after the shopper says yes. The request lands in Leads with the full conversation, and the alert reaches you in the portal and by email (leads and analytics).
The same agent can also answer your Instagram DMs, Messenger, WhatsApp and Slack, with one knowledge base, one set of skills and one balance of AI credits. A question about the fiddle-leaf fig sent as a DM gets the same answer as on the product page, from the same knowledge.
How much does an AI agent for a Shopify store cost?
Ultimo Bots is priced per agent in AI credits, and teammates are free. As of October 30, 2026, Smart is $29 a month ($19 a month billed yearly) with 500 AI credits, Boost is $59 a month ($39 billed yearly) with 2,000, and Ultimo is $249 a month ($199 billed yearly) with 10,000 (pricing). A standard answer uses 1 AI credit, so Smart covers up to 500 standard answers a month across every channel. There is no fee per seat and none per resolved conversation.
An answer that calls Shippo uses AI credits like any other answer. You get a usage warning at 80% of the month's credits by default, and on paid plans you can buy extra AI credits when a sale brings more traffic. Why Shopify stores pick Ultimo Bots
Pick Ultimo Bots for your Shopify store when the chat should sell and do store work, not only reply:
- You want product answers from your own pages and policies, and a teammate who can take over when a shopper asks.
- You want the chat to do the second step: delivery estimates, pre-order requests, payment links, sign-ups, each built by telling Mo in plain words.
- You use tools with a public API, such as a shipping platform, and want the agent to work with them instead of sending shoppers to a form.
- You sell beyond the storefront: the same agent answers on Instagram, Messenger, WhatsApp and Slack.
- You want free teammates and one balance of AI credits per agent that pays for both its answers and Mo.
A good first afternoon: paste the snippet, check that your product pages are in Website Links, and ask the agent the one question your inbox gets most this month. Then open the AI Studio and tell Mo the second step you answer by hand today.
Questions and answers
Can you add an AI chatbot to Shopify without an app?
Yes. Paste a three-line snippet into your theme: in Shopify go to Online Store > Themes, choose Edit code on your live theme, open theme.liquid and paste it just before the closing body tag. With Ultimo Bots, the AI agent then loads on every page of the store, answers from your store's pages, and hands shoppers to your team when someone is online.
What AI works with Shopify?
Shopify Inbox is Shopify's own free app with an AI sales associate. Helpdesk apps such as Tidio and Gorgias add AI agents billed by conversations or resolved interactions. Ultimo Bots runs on Shopify through a theme snippet and on Wix, WordPress and Webflow too, with skills you describe to Mo in the AI Studio, such as delivery estimates from your shipping platform.
How much does AI chat support for Shopify cost?
On October 30, 2026, Shopify Inbox was listed as free, Tidio's Lyro AI add-on started at $32.50 a month for 50 Lyro conversations, and Gorgias charged $1.00 per automated interaction on monthly plans. Ultimo Bots Smart costs $29 a month ($19 billed yearly) with 500 AI credits, where a standard answer uses 1 credit, and teammates are free.
Does an AI chat slow down my Shopify store?
The snippet loads its script with the defer attribute, so the browser keeps building your page while it loads. Measure your store with Google PageSpeed Insights before and after you add it, and judge your own numbers rather than any promise.
Can the agent answer questions about my products?
Yes. When you create the agent from your store's web address, it reads the text on your product pages, FAQ and policies, images only by their alt text. It then answers shoppers about prices, sizes, care and shipping from that content. Add a missing page under Knowledge Base > Website Links, and re-read the site there when your range changes.
Can the agent give shoppers a delivery estimate?
Yes, with a skill you describe to Mo. If you buy labels through a platform with a public API, such as Shippo, Mo builds a skill that works out your next ship day and asks for the carrier's transit estimate to the shopper's ZIP code. The agent presents it as the carrier's estimate and points to checkout for the shipping cost.
