If you run a small business, you are probably the support team. You answer chat between jobs, after dinner, and not at all at 3 AM. So the best live chat for small business is not the tool with the most agent features. It is the one that answers well when you cannot, and costs the same whether one person replies or three.
Who answers your website chat at 3 AM?
Every live chat tool looks the same at 2 PM, when you are at your desk. The difference shows at 3:14 AM, when a visitor asks whether you fix hydraulic brakes and can take their bike on Saturday.
A chat-only tool shows an offline form. The visitor leaves a message or leaves the site, and you read the question in the morning, when they may already have found another shop. Some vendors sell a way around this: tawk.to lists trained chat agents you can hire for $1 per hour (tawk.to pricing, October 2026).
An AI-first tool answers from your website and files, then asks for a name and email when the visitor wants a person to follow up. With Ultimo Bots, that visitor gets an answer at 3:14 AM, and the lead lands in your Leads list with the full conversation and an email alert. The first thing you do at 8 AM is reply to a warm customer, not chase a cold one.

A live chat tool for small business lets website visitors talk to the owner or an AI agent in real time, without phone calls, email delays or a dedicated support team. The "or" is the whole decision: who is on the other end when you are not.
What's the best AI chat for business?
The best AI chat for business answers from your own content, says plainly that it is an AI, and hands the conversation to a person when someone is there to take it. Themes, emoji and routing rules matter far less for a team of one.
Live chat tools come in two families. Chat-first tools were built for support teams who sit in an inbox all day, and they added AI later, usually as a paid add-on or a small monthly quota. AI-first tools start from the other end: the AI answers every conversation, and live chat is the way up to a person.
Ultimo Bots is an AI agent for small business websites that answers visitors from your content around the clock and hands the chat to you, in the same window, whenever you are online. The same agent, with one knowledge base, also answers on Messenger, Instagram, WhatsApp, Telegram and Slack; the live handover to a person works on the website widget and the chat link.
A fixed line above the website chat, "You are chatting with an AI assistant", tells every visitor who is answering. For a small business that matters: visitors know who they are talking to, and nobody is led to believe the AI is you.
Per-seat vs per-agent pricing: what a team of one pays
Most live chat software is priced per seat, so the bill grows every time you add a person. That is fair for a call center. For a business where the owner, a partner and a part-timer share the chat, it means paying three times for the same widget. On monthly billing, three people pay $75 a month on LiveChat Essential and $87 on Olark Live Chat. Tidio Starter with its Lyro AI add-on starts at $68 for up to 10 seats, and Ultimo Bots stays at $29.

tawk.toHow much is LiveChat?
LiveChat costs $25 per user per month on its Essential plan with monthly billing, or $19 per user billed yearly. Growth is $99 per user monthly or $79 yearly (LiveChat pricing, October 2026). Essential includes one AI agent with 10 AI resolutions per month, and an extra pack of 50 resolutions costs $49.50.
What the alternatives cost
Tidio charges $29 per month for its Starter plan on monthly billing, or $24.17 per month billed yearly, with 10 seats and 100 billable conversations. Its Lyro AI agent is an add-on from $39 per month on monthly billing ($32.50 billed yearly), and Starter includes 50 Lyro conversations once (Tidio pricing).
tawk.to is free if you keep its branding. Removing "Powered by tawk.to" costs $29 per month, and its AI Assist add-on starts at $29 per month, with a free tier for sites with little chat volume.
Olark charges $29 per agent per month for human-only live chat. Its AI Website Agent costs $400 per month billed yearly, including one human seat, plus $29 for each extra agent, so a team of three pays $458 a month (Olark pricing).
HubSpot Service Hub has a free plan with live chat for up to 2 users, with HubSpot branding. Paid plans are priced per seat; the Starter card says "starts at $7/mo/seat" and also shows $20 per seat, depending on the billing period. Professional adds a $1,500 one-time onboarding fee. Its Customer Agent runs on HubSpot Credits (HubSpot pricing).

Ultimo Bots$29/mo (Smart)Per AI agent, teammates freeIncluded: 500 AI credits/moUltimo Bots prices the AI agent, not the people. Smart is $29 per month ($19 billed yearly) with 500 AI credits, enough for up to 500 standard answers. Boost is $59 ($39) with 2,000 AI credits, Ultimo is $149 ($99) with 10,000. You and your teammates answer live chats at no extra cost, and your own messages in the live chat use no AI credits. See the full pricing page.
There is no overage bill. When the monthly AI credits run out, the agent pauses and tells visitors so, until your monthly AI credits renew, you buy extra AI credits or you move up a plan. You get a usage alert at 80% by default, so you see it coming.
Best live chat for small business: pick by situation
There is no single best live chat software for small business, because a hair salon, an online store and a two-person agency need different things. Two questions sort the tools: who answers when you are asleep, and what the bill does when someone joins you.

Ultimo BotsIf you sit at your desk all day, a free chat box is enough: tawk.to is free with its branding, and you can add AI Assist later if after-hours questions pile up. If your customers already live in HubSpot, the live chat in its free plan covers up to 2 users next to your contacts, with no AI agent listed; a third person needs a paid seat.
If several people share the chat, Tidio bills by conversations rather than per seat, with up to 10 seats on its self-serve plans. LiveChat is built around agents who sit in an inbox in shifts, and its per-user price makes sense once every user is there all day.
If you want questions answered while you are away, Olark's AI Website Agent comes with white-glove support at $400 per month billed yearly. Ultimo Bots is built for the owner who is the support team: the AI answers from your content, captures the lead, and you join the chat when you are online.
What happens when a visitor asks for a person?
Handover decides what a visitor experiences when the AI is not enough, so know exactly how it works before you choose. Here is the full path in Ultimo Bots, on the website widget and the chat link (more on the live chat page).
When you are online, a "Talk to a human" button shows in the chat. You go online and offline yourself in the portal. If a visitor asks for a person, or the AI runs out of answers and the visitor accepts its offer of a person, the AI hands over. You get a "Live agent requested" alert in the portal and by email, and on Slack or Telegram if you switch those on.
When you join, the AI stops replying, you see the full conversation, and the visitor sees that you have joined, with the name and avatar you set under Agent Identity. When you leave, the AI takes over again. On paid plans you can translate messages both ways, and on Boost and Ultimo an AI-suggested reply is one click away. Neither uses AI credits.
When nobody joins in time, the visitor sees your offline message after the wait time you set, anywhere from 30 to 500 seconds, and the AI keeps helping.
When you are offline, the button is hidden and the AI keeps answering. If the visitor wants a follow-up, the AI asks for their name and email, confirms them, and tells the visitor their request has been sent to the team. The lead reaches you right away, transcript included.
On Messenger and Instagram there is no live handover button, but you can pause the AI for one conversation and reply from the portal, as the person who connected the page. Those replies use no AI credits either.
What to look for when you are the support team
Feature lists for small business live chat are usually written for support departments. When you are the department, six questions decide almost everything.
- Answers when you are away. Does the AI answer from your website and files, and what does it cost per month on top of the chat?
- Price at your real team size. Multiply by everyone who will ever reply, including the part-timer who covers Saturdays.
- Alerts that reach you. Email is the minimum. An alert in an app you already check on your phone, such as Slack, is better when you are between jobs.
- Leads without a form wall. The AI should ask for contact details when the visitor wants a follow-up, not before the first question.
- An honest AI label. Visitors should always know when an AI is answering.
- Setup that fits your site. An app for your site builder or a short snippet, not a developer project.
If you do want names before the first message, Ultimo Bots also has an optional pre-chat form for the website widget on every plan. Every lead, from the form or from the conversation, shows up in Leads next to its conversation.
How to add live chat to a small business website
Adding live chat for website visitors is mostly work on your content, not on code. With Ultimo Bots it goes like this:
- 1
Install it where your site lives
On Wix add the Wix app, on Webflow the Webflow app, on WordPress the Ultimo Bots plugin. On most other sites, paste a three-line snippet before the closing body tag (website channel); Squarespace needs a paid plan for Code Injection, and the setup guide in the portal names the builders with similar limits.
- 2
Point the agent at your content
Add your website, PDF or Word files and a few Q&A pairs. The agent answers from your content, not from guesses about your business.
- 3
Rewrite the welcome message
Ultimo Bots puts in a starting welcome message and starter questions. Rewrite them in your own voice under Deploy > Design.
- 4
Turn on the alerts you will actually see
Under Notifications, choose where "Live agent requested" and new leads reach you: the portal, email, Slack or Telegram.
- 5
Go online and test the handover
Go online in the portal, open your site on your phone, tap "Talk to a human" and join the conversation from the portal.
Questions and answers
What is the best free live chat for a small business?
For chat only, tawk.to is free if you keep its branding, and HubSpot's free plan includes live chat for up to 2 users. Tidio's free plan covers 50 billable conversations. If you want an AI that answers while you are away, Ultimo Bots starts every paid plan with a free 7-day trial, and every new agent starts with a small one-time allowance of free AI credits. Prices as of October 2026.
Do I need a support team to use live chat?
No. With an AI-first tool, the AI answers questions from your content, and you join only when a visitor asks for a person while you are online. When you are offline, the AI keeps answering and takes contact details so you can follow up.
How much does live chat software cost for a small business?
It ranges from free (tawk.to, HubSpot's free plan) to $25 per user per month for LiveChat Essential or $99 for Growth on monthly billing, and $400 per month for Olark's AI Website Agent billed yearly. Ultimo Bots costs $29 per month on Smart, or $19 billed yearly, per AI agent, with teammates included. Prices as of October 2026.
Can live chat capture leads?
Yes. Most tools offer an offline or pre-chat form. Ultimo Bots also collects leads inside the conversation: when a visitor wants a follow-up, the AI asks for their name and email, confirms them, and the lead arrives in your Leads list with the full transcript and an alert.
Does live chat slow down my website?
Any chat widget adds a script to your pages. Ultimo Bots loads its script with defer and keeps its styles in a Shadow DOM, apart from your site. The only reliable answer for your site is a measurement: run PageSpeed Insights before and after you install any tool.
What is the difference between live chat and an AI agent?
Live chat connects a visitor to a person. An AI agent answers on its own from your content and can act, for example by collecting a lead. Ultimo Bots combines live chat with AI: the AI answers first, and a person takes over in the same window when someone on your team is online.
